Have You Reached A Health Plateau?

There are various health plateaus that I hear from working professionals about their health, and particularly, nutrition. An example of a few:

  • I can’t lose the extra 10 kg even though I am training 5 days a week and eating healthily

  • I eat really well all day and then order uber eats, and order too much food which I end up eating. I don’t know why I keep doing this.

  • I was lifting heavier, but now I can’t go any heavier even though I can see others that I train with, can.

  • I thought I understood what to do with my nutrition, but now I just feel confused from all the messaging on social media.

  • I fast, so I should be thinner.

  • I want lean muscle, but after years of training, it isn’t happening for me.

  • Why does a health plateau happen?

Perhaps you’ve even asked one or more of these questions before?

It can feel uncomfortable when you want to make another breakthrough with your health goals, but we often sabotage ourselves in the process.

This doesn't mean that you won't successfully reach your goal or that this is where you will be stuck forever!

It really is just representative of where your comfort level is at the moment, how much you believe you can change your health and where your mindset is with health right now.

Some questions to ask yourself

  • What are your thoughts and feelings about your health and fitness right now?

  • What stories are you telling yourself about your health and fitness?

  • Is your goal actually achievable?

  • What are you afraid of if you were to achieve your goal?

Here are some tips to break through a health plateau

Be honest with how you feel about your health.  What are your thoughts and feelings about your health and fitness right now? Perhaps you’ve slipped into some old (not great) health habits and have forgotten to work on nutrition, which you know plays big part in achieving your health goals.

2. Re-asses your goal. Was this a goal you set 12 months ago? If so, it may be outdated or simply unachievable given your lifestyle. Set two new goals: one for the short-term i.e., one month and one for the longer terms, i.e., 3-6 months. Reassess your goals when the time comes and note what you have achieved and what needs to be worked on. Remember: what gets measured, gets improved!

3. Allow yourself permission to get to that next level. Many of us can feel fear for many reasons, and the fear can block us from moving forward. What are you afraid of if you were to achieve your goal? What’s the worst that can happen? Who will you feel like you’re disappointing? Will it mean you have outgrown some old behaviours, some old groups of friends? Make a list and be honest with how this makes you feel.
